The book deals with the fallout after Dan Rather (Robert Redford) reported in 2004 that former President George W. Bush had received special treatment while serving in the Air National Guard during the Vietnam War. The report that was based on documents that turned out to be forgeries and the subsequent scandal became known as "Rathergate".
Cate Blanchett is set to play Rather's producer Mary Mapes who wrote the book. Mapes was accused of lapses in judgment and was fired, while Rather's career and reputation were tarnished.
Greenwood will play Andrew Heyward president of CBS News, the man who ultimately fires Mapes. He held that post from January 1996 until early November 2005.
John Benjamin Hickey will play the husband of Mapes. Topher Grace (Spider-Man 3) will play one of the key figures behind Rather’s downfall, Mike Smith. He’s “a researcher who helped figure out the truth behind the story Dennis Quaid will play Mapes’ friend, Colonel Roger Charles. Elisabeth Moss will play CBS News veteran Lucy Scott who was tasked with being Mapes' new associate producer to "run point" on the scandal.
"The Amazing Spider-Man" scribe James Vanderbilt makes his directorial debut on the film using the adapted screenplay he wrote.
Brad Fischer, William Sherak, Vanderbilt and Mikkel Bondesen are producing the film.
Production is underway in Sydney, Australia.
