Bana plays a struggling New York-based radio journalist who fakes front line war reports from the comfort of his hideout above a Manhattan restaurant.
In the original film, France mobilizes to gain the release of two kidnapped journalists in Iraq. The trouble is the victims know the crime has been faked.
Gervais will write, direct and produce the update.
