The Wrap reports that New Line Cinema has acquired the rights to the "Shaft" franchise and plan to develop a reboot of the films about a black NYPD detective.
Gordon Parks directed the original 1971 movie starring Richard Roundtree while John Singleton helmed the Samuel L. Jackson-led film in 2000 which was actually a prequel with Jackson's character the nephew of Roundtree's.
It's not certain if this incarnation will start over or serve as a sort-of
sequel as well. What is certain is that Jackson isn't coming back and a younger actor will be cast.
John Davis ("Predator," "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.") will produce the film.
