Keri Russell And Mahershala Ali Live In A "Free State"

THR says that Keri Russell and Mahershala Ali have joined the Civil War drama "The Free State Of Jones".

"The Hunger Games" director Gary Ross wrote the screenplay from which he will call the shots--The story follows Newton Knight (Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey), a Southern unionist who fled the battlefield and rallied Confederate Army deserters to his so-called Knight Company against the Confederacy. Knight went on to marry Rachel (played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw) who was the former slave of his grandfather and is still a divisive figure to this day .

Russell is set to play the wife of McConaughey’s character, Newt Knight, while Ali will play an escaped slave who becomes an ally of Knight’s rebellion against the Confederacy.

Scott Stuber  is set to produce the pic with Ross and Jon Kilik .

Pre-production is currently underway in Louisiana.
