RDJ Eyes Perry Mason Big Screen Return

There's a film series reboot of classic defense attorney character Perry Mason in the works says The Hollywood Reporter.

Created by author Earle Stanley Gardner--Mason was featured in more than 80 novels and short stories, most of which had a plot involving his client's murder trial. Typically, Mason was able to establish his client's innocence by implicating another character, who then confessed. Gardner was one of the best-selling authors of all time, and  had 135 million copies of his books in print in America alone at the time of his death in 1969.

The character of Perry Mason was portrayed each weekday on a long-running radio series, followed by a popular TV series from 1957–1966 starring Raymond Burr. Later Burr returned to the part for 30 made-for-TV movies filmed from 1985 to 1993.

Robert Downey Jr. is being lined up to take the up the Mason role.

Marc Guggenheim is writing the film script from an original story by Downey Jr. and David Gambino which takes the character back to his original 1930's Los Angeles origins as depicted in Gardner's books.

RDJ will produce the film with wife Susan Downey and Robert Cort.
