Joe Wright’s “Anna Karenina” Secures More Actors

With his first two features – Pride and Prejudice and Atonement– director Joe Wright became synonymous with British period pieces, though he quickly eschewed such notions with the modern drama The Soloist in 2009 and the action film Hanna, which hits theaters today.

Wright recently discussed the Leo Tolstoy adaptation with The Playlist, and here’s what he had to say about the casting:

Keira’s confirmed, Jude Law’s confirmed, Aaron Johnson’s confirmed, Kelly Macdonald‘s confirmed, Benedict Cumberbatch is confirmed. I’m still waiting on Saorise and James. I’m not sure about James, he recently just had a baby so [he’s busy].”

Even though we’re unfortunately not sure about McAvoy or Ronan, we can still be excited about Cumberbatch and Macdonald. The former isn’t a big name over here just yet, but that might change after audiences see him in both Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and War Horse later this year.

Benedict Cumberbatch

The latter, however, continues to become a bigger star after her breakthrough role in the Coen Brothers film No Country for Old Men back in 2007; she currently acts in the Golden Globe- and Screen Actors Guild Award-winning series Boardwalk Empire.

I’m curious to see which roles these actors take (Wright doesn’t reveal the characters they’re playing), and even more curious to see if McAvoy and Ronan end up hopping on board.

How do you feel about this casting?
