There's been a major casting shift for "We Need to Talk About Kevin" director Lynne Ramsay's new western "Jane Got A Gun" says THR.
Michael Fassbender, who was to have played the male lead in the Western, has left the movie, while Joel Edgerton, who was on board to play the villain, will step into the hero role.Jude Law, in the meantime, has signed on for the villain.
The story centers on a woman (Natalie Portman) who must defend her farm when her outlaw husband returns home after a gunfight at death's door. With his gang coming to kill them, she seeks the help of an ex-lover (Edgerton) to defend themselves.
Law will now play John Bishop, the leader of the gang of villains.
Rodrigo Santoro will play a character named Fitchum.
The shake-up comes a couple weeks before the start of shooting in New Mexico. Sources say the actor rotation came is due to Fassbender's schedule conflict with his upcoming shoot in Montreal for "X-Men: Days of Future Past".
Gun has been pushed back several times and now is scheduled to begin filming in April.
Brian Duffield wrote the script which forced a bidding war at the Cannes Film Festival and also made last year's annual Black List of best unproduced screenplays.
Portman, Scott Steindorff, Terry Dougas and Chris Coen are producing.
