Producer Joel Silver is planning another attempt to remake director John Carpenter's 1981 classic Escape from New York says Screen.
The original saw hard ass anti-hero Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) living in a near future totalitarian United States where Manhattan Island has been turned into a maximum security prison and Plissken has one day to rescue the U.S. President (Donald Pleasance) who is being held hostage there.
New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. were planning a remake for years that saw Len Wiseman and Breck Eisner attached to direct at different points along the way.
Gerard Butler, Jeremy Renner and Tom Hardy were linked to play Plissken during that time. The studios gave up though, letting their option expire two years ago.
Producers Silver and Andrew Rona have ambitious plans--- a completely new and fresh approach that they hope will turn into a trilogy starting with this 'origin story'.
