Ruby Barnhill Nabs Lead In Spielberg's "The Bfg"

Newcomer Ruby Barnhill is set to play in the live-action film adaptation of author Roald Dahl's 1982 children's book "The Bfg" says Variety.

The story follows a young girl named Sophie (Barnhill), the Queen of England and the BFG, who set out on an adventure to capture the evil, man-eating giants who have been invading the human world.

Melissa Mathison (E.T.), wrote the adapted screenplay from which Steven Spielberg will direct.

After a lengthy search, I feel Roald Dahl himself would have found Ruby every bit as marvelous as we do,” Spielberg said in an official statement. “We have discovered a wonderful Sophie in Ruby Barnhill.”

Barnhill is jazed by the opportunity to play Sophie: “Sophie gets to go on this wonderful adventure and I’m so excited that I get to play her. I feel incredibly lucky and I’m so happy." The 10-year-old actress has never appeared in a feature film before but has a role on the BBC children’s series 4 O'Clock Club

Tony and Olivier award-winning actor Mark Rylance has been cast as the benevolent giant title character. Rylance is currently working with Spielberg on the Untitled Cold War spy thriller.

Frank Marshall will produce the pic.

Spielberg will shoot the project in early 2015 ahead of a July 1st 2016 release.
