For all of the back and forth talk about William Shatner not appearing in the Star Trek reboot flick...
Behind the scenes tells the tale of what happened.
Director J.J. Abrams said that he and writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman had a flashback scene all ready for Shatner to make a cameo...
But "the truth is, it didn't quite feel right" he tells AMC TV.
Abrams adds that Shat was "very vocal that he didn't want to do a cameo. We tried desperately to put him in the movie, but he was making it very clear that he wanted the movie to focus on him significantly, which, frankly, he deserves".
He concludes "The truth is, the story that we were telling required a certain adherence to the Trek canon and consistency of storytelling."
None of this is all that much of a shock really. Cameo is not in Shatner's vocab when it comes to Kirk. Salary came up and narrative issues on top of that equals no original Kirk in the film.
