Deadline Hollywood Daily says that both Tobey Maguire and director Sam Raimi will indeed be returning to the "Spider-Man franchise for a 4th and potentially 5th film.
Insiders say Sony has only just recently locked in both veterans, though there's no deal yet for Kirsten Dunst even though the character of Mary Jane Watson is in the film.
The tone is said to be more light-hearted like the first two movies rather than the somber Spider-Man 3 or "The Dark Knight"
"Spider-Man is its own thing... the difference between Spider-Man and Batman is that Batman is duelling with a dark side of himself, and that's not what Peter Parker's struggle is" says an insider.
The story piggybacks of a Cinematical post that the studio is trying to figure out if it can feasibly shoot a fourth and fifth "Spider-Man" at the same time since doing so would be cost effective.
No villain has been announced yet but a source says "once you find out who the villain is, you'll know who's playing it."(Dylan Baker as Parker's college prof Dr. Curt Connors who in the comics becomes the Lizard?)
Filming will not start until next Fall because of the recently postponed May 2011 release.
All sounds pretty credible to me--Still would like some official word though...
The studio is also going forward with the musical and "Venom " solo flick
