The story follows his rise to glory from impoverished youth in Brazil to a soccer prodigy who led soccer-mad Brazil to its first-ever World Cup title in 1958. His teams ultimately won three World Cup titles. He is regarded as the greatest football player of all time by many fans and pundits. He scored 1,281 goals in a career spanning 1,363 games.
Diego Boneta (Rock of Ages), Colm Meaney (Get Him to the Greek) and Seu Jorge also star in the film with supporting roles.
D'Onofrio plays the Brazilian team’s coach Feola, while Meaney is the Swedish team's coach Raynor. Santoro's role is unspecified. Jorge will play Pelé’s father, while Boneta will play Pelé’s arch rival and the man responsible for giving him his nickname.
Kevin de Paula will play Pelé from age 13-17 and Leonardo Lima Carvalho who will play him at age 10.
Michael Zimbalist and Jeff Zimbalist (The Two Escobars) wrote the script from which they are directing.
Brian Grazer, Ivan Orlic, Kim Roth and Dany Wolf are producing the film.
