Berg, Kitsch Learn To Survive

Director Peter Berg and his former Friday Night Lights actor Taylor Kitsch could (and should) reunite for long gestating biopic "Lone Survivor" says Deadline.

Based on the non-fiction book by Marcus Luttrell , which recounts a mission his Seal team undertook to kill a terrorist leader, although they were ambushed in the Hindu Kush mountains of Afganistan and struggled to stay alive--Lutrell was the only one to come out alive

Berg has wanted to direct the film for years, even placing himself among a Navy SEAL Team in Iraq for a month and writing the screenplay based on Lutrell's account. Universal Pictures promised him a deal where he could make this film, as long as he made Battleship--also starring Kitsch--That and the fact Osama Bin Laden, was killed by U.S. Forces in Pakistan during a firefight recently put the pic on the front burner

Berg:

"They leaned right into it with me. Bin Laden's death has cleared the way for this, a movie that will be an unapologetically patriotic film that honors and pays homage to an incredible group of badass guys who do this. The film will be a bit like Black Hawk Down, but it will focus on the quartet, which is fewer guys than that film. The mission was similar to the assassination mission that got Bin Laden, but things got complicated when they ran into three kids and an old man. Under the rules of engagement,  they could have killed them, but they decided to let them go and take their chances, even though they knew these people would likely talk."they could have killed them, but they decided to let them go and take their chances, even though they knew these people would likely talk."

Production is being eyed for a January start. The pic comes to theaters in 2013.
