The latest installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise may have made for the highest international five-day debut in history, but it’s not doing quite as well in the States. Sure, it opened at the top of the box office by a landslide, but the 3D and IMAX 3D surcharges haven’t helped out much because, well, most moviegoers are opting for the effect-free 2D showings.
Entertainment Weekly proposes that an annoyance with 3D and the fact that it’s quite pricey might play into this dilemma, but the primary theory is that since it wasn’t launched as a 3D feature that people are content with just watching it in 2D like the other features.
This is probably true, but it’s also worth noting that the 3D for this film isn’t very impressive. Then again, neither is the film
