Helmer Jason Christopher puts on his costume, grabs an extra large sack, hoping to fill it with lots of candy...This time taking on the direct to video gem Trick 'r Treat as this special month long event celebrating horror hopes that he remembers to share!
Did ya know that the guy who co-wrote Superman Returns actually wrote a good movie? All right, maybe that’s a little harsh but Superman Returns was kind of muddled, we all know this. Anyway, Michael Dougherty not only wrote but directed this real bad ass movie, Trick ‘r Treat. Hell, Bryan Singer produced it, which has to mean something – Keyser Soze!
The film has interlocking tales set on Halloween night: a high school principal moonlights as a vicious serial killer; the quest of a young virgin for that special someone takes a gruesome turn; a group of teens carries out a cruel prank with disastrous consequences; and a cantankerous old man battles a mischievous trick-or-treating demon.
This movie is a lot of fun it has something for everyone! Serial killers, wolves, and ghosts! It has a Creepshow vibe or perhaps Chillerama. It’s like Pulp Fiction meets Creepshow.
The cast is great too, Brian Cox is in there, Anna Paquin, Leslie Bibb, and Dylan Baker. They all give top-notch performances. I remember seeing this movie for the first time and completely being tossed and turned by the crazy amount of twists that go on in this flick. One of my favorite twists involves Anna Paquin. My favorite segment? That's a close call. It's either the serial killer principal’s story or the school bus segment, all in all this is a fun movie though.
I had the movie on DVD but bought it on Blu Ray because of the special features. Remember when standard discs used to have all those extra features? Yeah, me too. There’s a real cool documentary on here about the history of Halloween and how it came about.
So if you haven’t yet seen Trick ‘r Treat, please do so because it’s a crazy fun time. It’s pretty short too. As an anthology, it only runs at 82 minutes long.
11 days till Halloween.
-Jay
