Mangold On Where "The Wolverine" Fits

While chatting with Empire, director James Mangold's confirmed that the events in "The Wolverine" take place AFTER those chronicled in "X-Men: The Last Stand".

The script initially written by Christopher McQuarrie--then reworked by Mark Bomback--is set mostly in Japan and based on the great mini-series by Frank Miller and Chris Claremont. The sequel will find our steel clawed hero (star Hugh Jackman) going toe to toe with the Silver Samurai.

Will Yun Lee will play Harada, aka. The Silver Samurai - a crime lord's illegitimate son with an electrified suit of armor. Brian Tee ("Grimm") is Noburo Mori, a corrupt justice minister about to marry the crime lord's daughter (who is Logan's love interest). Also cast are Hiroyuki Sanada ("Lost," "The Last Samurai") as Shingen, Hal Yamanouchi ("Push") as Yashida, and Tao Okamoto and Rila Fukushima as Mariko and Yukio. Svetlana Khodchenkova ("Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy") plays 'The Viper' Famke Janssen will cameo as Jean Grey-A role she played in the first 3 films in the X-Men film series

"Where this film sits in the universe of the films is after them all. Jean Grey is gone, most of the X-Men are disbanded or gone, so there’s a tremendous sense of isolation for him," says Mangold.

"That’s something that for me was very important, that I land in a very specific place in his timeline. I wanted to be able to tell the story without the burden of handing it off to a film that already exists and having to conform to it."

It is that notion that allows Mangold to explore some big themes in the film: "The ideas of immortality reign very heavily in this story and the burden of immortality weighs heavily on Logan. For me that’s such an interesting part of Logan’s character that is nearly impossible to explore if you have a kind of league or team movie."

Mangold calls the film a mix of "Japanese noir with tentpole action"

Filming on the project continues in Sydney in Surry Hills and around the Olympic Stadium's car parks.

The Wolverine has a July 26th 2013 release date.
