Gosling Stops Logan's Run

Ryan Gosling has dropped out of the remake of the sci-fi classic "Logan's Run" according to Variety's Justin Kroll.

Gosling and his Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn have been attached to the remake since early 2011. No reason was given for Gosling's departure, and it's not clear if Refn remains attached.

Still it's a shame--I was looking forward to seeing what Refn and Ryan cooked up for this one.

William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson wrote the original 1967 novel (and its two subsequent sequels Logan's World and Logan's Search) set in a utopian future where anyone over the age of 30 is mandatorily euthanized in order to maintain a balance over the consumption of resources. The story follows Logan 5, a 'Sandman' who serves as an enforcer who pursues those who try escaping as they approach their 30th birthday, and ultimately ends up on the run himself.

The remake has attracted potential directors such as Bryan Singer, Robert Schwentke, James McTeigue Joseph Kosinski and Carl Rinsch during its long stall in development.

Screenwriters including Alex Garland Andrew Baldwin and Will Beall (Gangster Squad) have worked on the script at different points of time.

The premise was made into a 1976 cult film classic starring Michael York ("The Three Musketeers"), Jenny Agutter ("Walkabout") and Farrah Fawcett ("Charlie's Angels").
