Our first look at the latest film adaptation of William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" has arrived.
Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth have been cast as Romeo and Juliet. Kodi Smit-McPhee is tapped to play Romeo's cousin Benvolio Tybalt will be played by Gossip Girl guy Ed Westwick Paul Giamatti is in the role of the mentor-like Friar Lawrence
Also starring Stellan Skarsgard (Prince of Verona), Lesley Manville (The Nurse), Christian Cooke (Mercutio), Tomas Arana (Lord Montague), Laura Morante (Lady Montague) and Leon Vitali (Apothecary). Damian Lewis and Natascha McElhone will play Lord and Lady Capulet
Adapter of the new screenplay Julian Fellowes says this version will be a "romantic, traditional rendition of the piece" set in the medieval time of the play - something we really haven't seen since since Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 film and has tightened the play to fit into a standard two-hour feature running time, but reportedly did very little re-writing. Because Steinfeld was only 14-years-old at the time, the infamous sex scene has been cut from the script.
Carlo Carlei directed the film
Fellows is also producing with Gabriele Muccino, Ileen Maisel and Mark Ordesky.
Filming took place in Rome, Mantua and Siena in Italy.
The new “Romeo and Juliet” hits U.K. theaters on Oct. 25, but has yet to get an American release date.
That's all fine and dandy I guess. I still prefer the 1996 version starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes that Baz Luhrmann directed--which used Shakespeare's words set in the modern world.
