Midnight Rider Loses William Hurt--Future In Doubt

William Hurt is withdrawing from his starring role in the music biopic Midnight Rider: The Gregg Allman Story says  Deadline.

A film adaptation of Gregg Allman's memoir "My Cross to Bear" The All-American Rejects singer Tyson Ritter and Wyatt Russell will play The Allman Brothers The duo will perform vocals, guitar, piano and organ throughout the film about the Southern rock group who hit it big in the 1960s and 1970s, as it dealt with numerous tragedies.

27-year-old camera assistant Sarah Jones died during filming in February and the pic has been on hiatus since then.  Currently, there’s an investigation underway to determine the cause of the accident and if criminal charges should be filed.

Production was taking place in Atlanta, Georgia when, on February 20, when a train collided with film equipment in rural Doctortown, Ga, where the crew was setting up to shoot on a train trestle that overlooks the Altamaha River--seven other crew members were also injured

Hurt was on the bridge when the accident happened. He was set to play the older version of Gregg Allman in the film

Despite a source telling the trade that the filmmakers led by helmer  Randall Miller are now looking to recast several roles, the biopic’s future remains unclear.

If it does resume production, it could face union pressure, litigation and protests from sectors of the film industry.
