Flash Gordon Remake A Go @ Fox

Heat Vision reports that Fox has closed a deal to pick up the screen rights for a big screen reboot of "Flash Gordon" character.

Crated by Alex Raymond Flash is a sports hero who accidentally travels to the planet Mongo with his lady love, Dale Arden, and scientist Dr. Hans Zarkov. There, they discover a world ruled by Ming the Merciless. Originally a science fiction newspaper comic strip in the 1930s, it was first adapted for the screen as very popular movie serials.

The 1980 film (pictured) was a total flop at first-but has since become a cult hit to many--myself included-, thanks to a well-known theme song by the band Queen-among other fun reasons.

SyFy's attempted TV series remake of a few years ago but thanks to drew poor reviews and low ratings, the show was cancelled.

Film director Stephen Sommers tried to mount another film four years ago, but it fell apart. After that fellow filmmaker Breck Eisner was attached to do the project that stalled out as well.

"Star Trek 3" scribes J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay are set to pen the film's adapted script. George Nolfi ("The Bourne Ultimatum") did the story treatment from which Payne and McKay will concoct the script.

John Davis ("Chronicle") will serve as producer
