Jenny Bicks ("Rio 2," "The Big C") is writing the script, though specific plot details are unknown.
Throughout her history the doll has had 150 careers, it's hard to say what will be included in the comedic film beyond her signature pink Malibu mansion and sturdy suitor Ken.
Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are set to produce the film.
Production is hoped to begin before the end of the year.
Universal previously tried to get a "Barbie" movie off the ground in 2009 but it never happened.
