X-Men-Days Of Future Past & The Rogue Sub-Plot That Got Cut

Producer/writer Simon Kinberg talked to Empire recently about Anna Paquin's Rogue and her work that did not make the theatrical cut of Bryan Singer's "X-Men Days of Future Past".

The actress filmed her scenes that are part of the film's extensive future-set opening action sequence. But then we learned that her screen time got edited out of the film. At that time, Paquin said that she was disappointed not to make it into the film, but understood.

Paquin's character made it into the final film anyway for a very brief seconds only cameo at the end.

Kinberg confirmed that the cut sequence was developed where she was  a central figure. Singer said that it was edited for time and hoped that it will end up on the disc release.

SPOILERS AHEAD

The first part of the sequence we've already heard about - Future Professor Charles Xavier (Sir Patrick Stewart), Future Magneto (Sir Ian McKellen), and Bobby Drake aka Iceman (Shawn Ashmore) teaming up to rescue Rogue from the Sentinels . The other part follows the injury that Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page) sustains during the film due to Wolverine's claws. Rogue steps in to absorb Kitty's powers so she can remain stable, keeping Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) safely in the past.

When the first part of the sequence was cut, the latter became useless so Rogue's appearance in the bleak future was cut altogether and Kitty Pryde stayed on to keep Logan in the past.

Speaking about the the footage that was cut, Kinberg says:

"I thought it would increase the urgency and the stakes of the plot in the future, but it actually does the opposite, because it makes you feel like there is an answer out there. You think once Rogue gets here, we’ll have an unlimited amount of time. The ticking clock that we’d established with Kitty getting wounded and losing her powers... well, Rogue would show up and press stop on the clock. So for all of those narrative reasons, there was this ten-minute subplot that had to go."
