A Few More Goodies About "Guardians Of The Galaxy"

A few days ago USA Today posted new images of Yondu Udonta as played by "The Walking Dead" fave Michael Rooker in James Gunn's film adaptation of Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy".

Yondu first appeared in a 1969. He hails from the Zatoan tribe on Centauri IV, the first planet to be colonized outside of the Sun's solar system in the 29th Century. Yondu does not possess any super-human abilities, but he is a skilled hunter with a bow and arrow, and has a mystical "sixth sense" that gives him limited empathic abilities with other life forms. He is one of the founding members of the group.

In the photos the character doesn't have either the red loincloth or giant head fin of his comic book counterpart--Rooker does sport a smaller mohawk shaped metallic prosthetic made to look as if it's protruding from his head.

 

Gunn tells Moviefone that the upcoming film boasts a "ton" of Marvel references. He promises that there's around four times as many in here as there are in any previous Marvel movie.

"I actually have to clear everything with legal. We put in little things like graffiti on the walls and stuff like that. There's a ton of characters from the comics in this movie, in little tiny roles. But we have to clear everything with legal because once I use their name then I'm screwed in that scene or whatever. We have just tons of reference to Marvel Cosmic throughout the movie. And I'm certain probably the most Marvel comics characters ever in one movie."

The Wrap has the first box office  tracking figures for the sci-fi action/comedy--with the film heading towards a $60 million drbut.

That's a very good number for a movie that is based on a property that many, even among comics fans are unfamiliar with. The tone is also quite different from the previous movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Made with a pretty hefty $170 million production budget, the film will have to do big business to make a profit. Marvel isn't too worried though, all the three of their films released so far this Summer--Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and X-Men Days of Future Past--have all made over $200 million domestically and $700 million worldwide.

Finally there's a new featurette that centers on Zoe Saldana as Gamora a "green-skinned humanoid who is the last of a species that was exterminated by a race known as the Badoon" who also "happens to be a skilled assassin.":



The film arrives August 1, 2014.
