"Magic Mike Xxl" Loses Matthew McConaughey
Matthew McConaughey is NOT reprising his role as Dallas in the upcoming sequel "Magic Mike Xxl".
Steven Soderbergh's longtime assistant director Gregory Jacobs ("Criminal," "Wind Chill") is taking over the helm of the film. Jacobs served as both assistant director and producer on the first "Magic Mike," while Soderbergh will stay on as an executive producer director of photography, camera operator and film editor for the sequel. Star star Channing Tatum and Reid Carolin penned the script for the second film.
Tatum told GQ that the sequel sees Mike and some of the others heading out on a road trip tour of stripper conventions.
Jacobs tells The Playlist that the sequel will be "very different". He adds:
"What am I allowed to say? … It's road trip movie and put it this way, it's different enough that once you see it you'll understand why we made a sequel. No one will be accusing us of making the same movie twice."
Tatum,Matt Bomer and Joe Manganiello are the only confirmed returnees at the moment. It's not known if Alex Pettyfer or any of the others will be back, but new cast members will definitely be in the mix.
Second unit photography has begun ahead of the principal shoot which will kick off in a couple of weeks.
Soderbergh as director of photography and editor on the film makes for a unique collaboration, to that Jacobs says:
"I wish I could get a good DP… I think it's going to be really fun. I mean, I'm on set every day when we're shooting [Steven's projects] as it is. We're constantly suggesting stuff to each other. It's really intimate and collaborative and it always has been. So I think it'll be a lot of fun. We already shot some second unit stuff which was a total blast. I think it's going to be a good time."
"Mike 2" hits July 1st 2015.
