Roger Donaldson Charts "Western Front" Redux

Roger Donaldson ("The Recruit," "The November Man") will direct the remake of "All Quiet on the Western Front" states Variety .

The story explores the physical and emotional effects of trench warfare on a 19-year-old German soldier and his buddies in uniform.

Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell's new adapted script is said to include a gritty and realistic look about the "unforgiving nature of trench warfare".

Author Erich Maria Remarque's 1928 novel was previously adapted into the 1930 feature film directed by Lewis Milestone which won a Best Picture Oscar. It was then adapted as a 1979 TV movie as well,

Mimi Leder ("Deep Impact") was attached to direct this remake several years ago, but she is no longer involved. Daniel Radcliffe previously eyed the lead role at that time.

Production is slated to begin in March in Europe.
