The alien invasion war flick Battle: Los Angeles easily takes the top sopt Red Riding Hood trotts out at #3 and Mars Needs Moms barely makes the top 5
Pamela McClintock of THR:
Sony’s Battle: Los Angeles topped the weekend box office with a strong $36 million opening, but Warner Bros.’ Red Riding Hood and Disney’s Mars Needs Mom weren’t so lucky.
The news was particularly bad for Disney financially, since Mars cost $150 million to produce, but only grossed $6.8 million in its debut -- one of the studio’s lowest openings in recent memory.
Red Riding Hood, unable to attract enough younger females, opened to an estimated $14.1 million, well behind expectations. Film’s performance could dampen Hollywood’s enthusiasm for a number of similar projects now in development.
Paramount holdover Rango trounced both Red Riding Hood and Mars, grossing $23.1 million in its second weekend to come in No. 2 behind Battle. Rango’s cume is roughly $68.7 million.
Red Riding Hood came in No. 3, followed by Universal holdover The Adjustment Bureau, which fell 46% in its second weekend to an estimated $11.5 million for a cume of $38.5 million.
Mars, which played heavily to families and received a B CinemaScore, placed No. 5....
