Over the weekend director/producer Michael Bay raised more than a few eyebrows when he commented on the forthcoming reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Here's what Bay said "When you see this movie, kids are going to believe that one day these turtles actually do exist…when we are done with this movie. These turtles are from an alien race, and they're going to be tough, edgy, funny, and completely lovable"
The use of the word Alien led to an online fuss, as fans of the beloved franchise quickly expressed their outrage that Bay and his team would change the origin of the heroes for the new film.
Bay has responded to those critics on his official website.
In a statement he says:
"Fans need to take a breath, and chill. They have not read the script. Our team is working closely with one of the original creators of Ninja Turtles to help expand and give a more complex back story. Relax, we are including everything that made you become fans in the first place. We are just building a richer world."
Bay has also won the endorsement of actor Brian Tochi who voiced turtle team leader Leonardo in the 90's.
It would be ridiculous for Bay's team to change things too much--I tend to have a wait and see attitude on this...I remember Trekker angst over "changes" in 2009's Star Trek reboot prior to its release and look how that turned out...
Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec wrote the script for the reboot from which Jonathan Liebesman will direct.
Bay, Brad Fuller Andrew Form, Galen Walker and Scott Mednick will co-produce the pic for a release by Christmas 2013.
