Sony Pictures has come back to help produce the big screen adaptation of Cassandra Clare's supernatural novel series The Mortal Instruments reports Deadline.
The adaptation was nixed by Sony in February and then picked up by Constantin Film...
Based on the first book "City of Bones" and set in contemporary New York City, the story follows a seemingly ordinary teenager Fray (Lily Collins who is attached to star) who discovers she is the descendant of a line of Shadowhunters a secret cadre of young half-angel warriors locked in an ancient battle to protect our world from demons. She soon join forces with a group of Shadowhunters, who introduce her to a dangerous alternate New York called Downworld, filled with demons, warlocks, vampires, werewolves and other deadly creatures.
Jessica Postigo and I. Marlene King wrote the adapted script. Robert Kulzer, Michael Lynne and Robert Shaye are producing.
Jamie Campbell Bower had been cast as Jace Wayland, one of the best Shadowhunters before the pic was halted It's not clear if Bower is still involved--The Jace role had Alex Pettyfer in talks for it at one point as well
Scott Charles Stewart was set to helm but vacated after the collapse instead choosing to start work on a TV series based on his film Legion. Now director Harald Zwart (The Karate Kid remake) has taken over.
Production on Mortal Instruments is set to begin on August 15th in Toronto
With The Hunger Games making a mint--it is no wonder that Sony jumped back in to partner on the project.
