Hunger Games Box Office-Final Weekend Grosses

The final numbers for the record-breaking weekend debut of  The Hunger Games have been tallied and as it turns out the slightly higher studio estimates were not that far off...

Pamela McClintock of THR:

With every box office dollar now counted, the final opening tally for goliath The Hunger Games is $152.5 million.

That's slightly lower than Lionsgate's Sunday estimate of $155 million, but it doesn't change the movie's vaunted status.

Hunger Game shattered a number of records, and is the highest opening ever for a nonsequel or film debuting outside of summer. (Previous record-holder was Alice in Wonderland, which debuted to $116 million in March 2010.)

Just as impressive, Hunger Games delivered the third-highest opening of all time domestically, besting Spider-Man 3 ($151.1 million), The Twilight Saga: New Moon ($142.8 million) and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1 ($138.1 million).

Hunger Games ranks behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 2 ($169.2 million) and The Dark Knight ($158.4 million).

Directed by Gary Ross and produced by Nina Jacobson, Hunger Games is based on Suzanne Collins' bestselling young adult novel and headlines Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth.

Box office observers believe Hunger Games has a shot at ultimately earning $350 million to $400 million at the domestic box office, although fan-fueled film properties often drop off more quickly than other tentpoles.

Hunger Games isn't doing the same blockbuster business overseas, where it opened to a solid, but unspectacular, $59.3 million. The pic did best in English-speaking territories.

As this article points out--The record breaking bow all but assures that star Jennifer Lawrence who plays heroine Katniss stands to better than double her asking salary thanks to the film's box office stats while bumps for stars of similar franchises suggest she and co-stars Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth could take home bigger checks for the sequels.
