Mia Wasikowska ("Alice in Wonderland," "Jane Eyre") will star in a new film adaptation of Gustave Flaubert's first published novel--the classic "Madame Bovary" says Variety.
Wasikowska will play Emma Bovary, the beautiful wife of a small-town doctor who she married to escape her father's pig farm. She constantly tries to climb the social ladder by engaging in extra-marital affairs.
Paul Giamatti is attached to play Monsieur Homais, the town apothecary who is a close confidant of her husband Charles.
The film is a faithful period piece but is said to emphasise the more youthful and contemporary themes.
Sophie Barthes ("Cold Souls") will direct from a screenplay by Rose Barreneche.
Joe Neurauter and Felipe Marino will produce
Production kicks off this Fall in Europe
