Feige tells Coming Soon that the new Iron Man & Thor films will essentially be stand-alones while the second 'Captain' will "have more in common with the backdrop of 'Avengers'… Tony Stark can go home to Malibu and deal with his own circle of friends and his own sort of military industrial complex that the world of Stark Industries inhabits. Thor as you will see initially leaves the planet and goes back to Asgard and has to deal with the Nine Realms, and to reconnect with Jane Foster. Cap is the only one that can't go home again. His home is gone, and how he deals with the modern era will be the crux of that movie."
There will be some period flashbacks in the Cap sequel but it's undetermined as to how many the film will have and how they will relate to the present.
Feige told Collider that filming on the "Thor" sequel begins in three months in London and deals with the fallout of the Bifrost being destroyed at the end of the first film and how it has affected the Nine Realms. Loki will have a part in the film but he's not the primary villain.
Also there are no plans to do a new "Hulk" movie starring Mark Ruffalo, but they have an option for Whedon to direct a sequel to "The Avengers" when the time comes.
That mystery fourth film in May 2014 is not Ant-Man but Feige hints we'll hear something about that in the next few months. The mystery project may be the previously announced Doctor Strange or "Guardians of the Galaxy" movies.
Crave Online wanted specifics from him about 'Guardians' and he confirmed the characters will be from the more recent era of the comic rather than the original - "It's more Star-Lord and Drax and Gamora, and less Vance Astro and that team."
Sounds like a lot of fun right?
Turning back to The Avengers now THR says that new pre-release tracking figures over the weekend indicate the film is tracking better than both "The Dark Knight" and "The Hunger Games" were at this point ahead of their theatriical releases - both of those films opened in the $150-160 million range.
Meanwhile director Whedon confirmed that his 'first assembly' cut of the film ran three hours (the final film runs 2hrs 22mins). As a result "at least 30 minutes" of deleted scenes will make on to the disc release.
Most of the stuff cut was character elements. He tells Collider that "It’s some character stuff but it was more ancillary. Marvel never wanted to take the texture out of the movie, the little moments between people. We wanted, obviously, to streamline it and make it not so long that it became self-indulgent… but the thing I loved was there were so many little moments that I thought, 'They’re going to make me squeeze this out,' and they never did. Once we had the structure down, they really wanted it to breathe and for these things to be as textured as they could be."
One of the cut scenes was one in Steve Rogers' (Chris Evans) apartment in Brooklyn. Another was a "beautiful and poignant scene between Steve and Peggy [Carter] that takes place in the present" he tells The NY Times.
He also admits he was the one who eventually cut it - "I was the one who was like, Guys, we need to lose this. It was killing the rhythm of the thing."
