Nic Pizzolatto has been hired to write the remake of John Sturges' 1960 western classic "The Magnificent Seven" according to Variety.
The original was itself a loose remake Akira Kurosawa's acclaimed 1954 film "Seven Samurai" and followed seven gunfighters-for-hire tasked with protecting a small Mexican village from bandits. Three sequels Return of the Seven (1966) Guns of the Magnificent Seven (1969) The Magnificent Seven Ride! (1972) and a short-lived TV series (1998-2000) followed.
Tom Cruise is keen to star in the remake.
No director is signed yet.
Meanwhile Bill Wheeler is gonna adapt Bryan Christy's non-fiction book "The Lizard King" Variety also reports
David Frankel (is attached to direct the romantic caper about a female Fish and Wildlife agent's attempts to catch and successfully prosecute a wily international reptile smuggler (and his reckless partner father) based in Miami in the 1990's.»
