The true story is chronicled in the book by Robyn Davidson (Mia Wasikowska), who traveled more than 1,678 miles through the Australian desert in 1977.
Driver plays Rick Smolan, a National Geographic photographer who accompanied Davidson on her trip.
John Curran (The Painted Veil) will direct.
Emile Sherman and Iain Canning will produce.
Shooting kicks off October 8th in locations in South Australia and the Northern Territory.
