Abu-Assad Will Show "Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance"

Palestinian director will call the shots on the English-language remake of Chan-wook Park's 2002 violent classic "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" says The Wrap.

The original followed a deaf-mute man whose attempt to pay for his sister’s kidney transplant spawns a series of violent encounters.

Brian Tucker ("Broken City") wrote the adapted screenplay.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian are producing this remake

The original film was the first of Park's Vengeance Trilogy, three standalone films that were linked thematically rather than narratively. The second is the 2003 cult classic "Old Boy"  that Spike Lee directed set for release in November. A remake of the third one, 2005's "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance," is in development at Annapurna Pictures.

The project will likely come after Abu Assad's next project, the Palestine-set drama "Lamya" which he describes as a road movie about a girl seeking the mother who ran out on her.
