On the stump promoting Friday's Edge Of Tomorrow filmmaker Doug Liman is talking to IGN about his film adaptation of Ubisoft's video game "Splinter Cell".
The games follow Sam Fisher (Tom Hardy), a black ops agent who neutralizes
terrorist threats around the world for a secret government division
called Echelon.
Liman says that the film is essentially an origin story about Fisher:
"I'm working on the script with Tom Hardy. I think we
have a great take on how to make an awesome film out of that. Everything
about Splinter Cell will be younger. It's a chance to come up with a
new franchise that is fresher and newer and younger, and Tom Hardy is
such an incredible actor. Some of the tropes of the game will for sure be in the film, but also
the fun of that is when you lose them. To strip that stuff away and
really make the character have to operate without it."
Filming was originally slated to begin in August until Sheldon Turner (Up in the Air, X-Men: First Class) was hired
to take over the script to perform re-writes.
Eric Warren Singer ("American Hustle") penned the previous draft.
Basil Iwanyk and Jean-Julien Baronnet are producing the project.
Ubisoft will be very involved and retain control over how the game is translated into a film.
No word as yet as to when
it will actually begin shooting. The film has been in the works for nearly as decade with Peter Berg previously attached to direct.
The project marks a reunion of Turner, Liman and Hardy. All three are still attached to a George Mallory biopic "The Summit" aka Everest but that project is on hold and probably won't film until
next year.
