PHOTO: Sir Ian McKellen Is "Mr. Holmes"

The first photo has been released via Twitter from the newly titled "Mr. Holmes".

Set in 1947, Sir Ian McKellen plays a long-retired incarnation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes . Holmes now lives in a sleepy Sussex village with his housekeeper Mrs Munro (Laura Linney) and her amateur-sleuthing son (newcomer Milo Parker of "Ghosthunters: On Icy Trails"). It's not a peaceful retirement though. The detective is haunted by an unsolved fifty year old case involving an angry husband and his unstable wife, a case of which he only remembers fragments.

Deadline reports that "47 Ronin" and "Helix" star Hiroyuki Sanada is set to join the film as Umezaki, a Prickly Ash plant enthusiast who Holmes visits in Japan. . Hattie Morahan ("The Bletchley Circle") Roger Allam ("V for Vendetta," "The Thick of It"), Phil Davis ("Whitechapel," "Vera Drake"), Frances de la Tour ("Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," "The History Boys"), Patrick Kennedy ("Atonement") also star.

Jeffrey Hatcher is writing the adapted script from the "A Slight Trick Of The Mind" by author Mitch Cullin.

Anne Carey, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman and Aviv Giladi will produce the movie.

Production just began in the United Kingdom
