He holds The Hammer

Deadline Hollywood Daily reports that 25 year old Chris Hemsworth has landed the lead role in the comic book adaptation flick Thor and the Red Dawn remake.

Thor....

The 6'3 actor was part of early casting reads and then turned away (as was his brother Liam who just won the lead male role in Miley Cyrus' new film).

His agent though pushed hard...

Producer Kevin Feige decided to let Chris read again and put it on tape. Director Kenneth Branagh saw that last week and apparently made his decision to cast today.

The origin story was written by Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend) and is being described as about “a god realizing his true potential.”

He has the build and height to play the character--

The film will hit theaters May 20, 2011 and Hemsworth will also appear in the superhero team-up The Avengers scheduled a year later.

In Dawn:

He'll play Jed Eckert, originally played by Patrick Swayze...that is scheduled to arrive in theaters on September 24, 2010.

Hemsworth, who got his break playing the often shirtless Kim Hyde on the Aussie soap "Home and Away" for several years, left the show and moved to the US a few years ago to pursue his career.

His first American film is playing Captain Kirk's dad in the opening sequence of the"Star Trek" reboot.

We'll see him in action plenty over the next year though...

He next stars in David Twohy's A Perfect Getaway, Ca$h and is currently filming "The Cabin in the Woods"
