The May 21st sequel "Terminator Salvation" had to be re-written before Christian Bale signed on the dotted line according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Director McG originally wanted Bale to the play the role of Marcus Wright (played now by Sam Worthington), but Bale wanted to play the role of John Connor which was a much smaller role in earlier drafts.
"A lot of the work was integrating (Connor) into scenes ... and having that feel integral and sensible, as opposed to grafted on just because there was a star in the part" says co- writer John D. Brancato.

In the current film, both Wright and Connor share equal time on screen.
Meanwhile McG talked with io9 about the film's original alternate ending and explained it in much detail. The film’s current ending is very different to what's described here, Still, BEWARE this may still be considered SPOILERISH:
"We had a jet-black ending. Connor dies, we’re in a room with all the people we care about. You take Connor’s likeness, you put it on the living machine of Marcus. He sits up, now looking like Christian Bale, takes a gun, kills Kate, kills Kyle, kills Star, kills everybody, eyes flare red, [snaps] the end"
That description is slightly different to the original online leak last year which said the ending did involve Connor dying and Marcus taking on Connor's likeness-the others don't die and the mechanical Connor goes on to lead the resistance in the war against the machines.
Finally, will the topless Moon Bloodgood scene make it to the DVD?
McG tells Terminator Chronicles that it was cut out because "it felt more like a gratuitous moment of a girl taking her top off in an action picture, and I didn’t want that to convolute the story or the characters."
Who's he fooling? No--it was cut to give the studio its desired PG-13 rating....
