Actor Matt Damon thinks that instead of a sequel to The Bourne Ultimatum the studio could take the action franchise down the prequel/reboot path--taking the audience back to the adventures of a younger Jason Bourne.
He tells Empire that "There’ll probably be a prequel of some kind with another actor and another director before we do another one, just because I think we’re probably another five years away from doing it - we’ve got to get a script."
2-time Bourne director Paul Greengrass walked away from calling action on the Untitled Jason Bourne 4 over script problems in December of'09.
Ultimately the studio will choose one or the other. The sequel is looking more and more unlikely. The prequel/reboot would be ideal for the studio in terms of cost control but story wise is it's risky since it would have to be set in the character's pre-Treadstone Green Beret days-before becoming 'Jason Bourne'.
