Rhys Meyers Gets Key Role In The Mortal Instruments

Jonathan Rhys Meyers is in talks to join the cast of the big screen adaptation of Cassandra Clare's supernatural novel series "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" says Heat Vision.

Based on the first book "City of Bones" and set in contemporary New York City, the story follows a seemingly ordinary teenager Fray (Lily Collins) who discovers she is the descendant of a line of Shadowhunters a secret cadre of young half-angel warriors locked in an ancient battle to protect our world from demons. She soon join forces with a group of Shadowhunters, who introduce her to a dangerous alternate New York called Downworld, filled with demons, warlocks, vampires, werewolves and other deadly creatures.

Rhys Meyers will play Valentine Morgenstern, a powerful but insane Shadowhunter looking to make the world pure at any cost.

Jamie Campbell Bower has been cast as Jace Wayland, one of the best Shadowhunters.--The Jace role had Alex Pettyfer in talks for it at one point. Jemima West plays Isabelle Lightwood. Kevin Durand and Robert Maillet will play Pangborn and Blackwell two henchman of the main villain, Valentine. Lena Headey will play Jocelyn Fray, Clary’s mother and a Shadowhunter-in-hiding. Jared Harris is Hodge Starkweather, Jace and Clary’s mentor. Godfrey Gao as Magnus Bane, the High Warlock of Brooklyn. Kevin Zegers will portray Alec Lightwood, the gay brother of Isabelle, who has unreciprocated love for Jace. He thus despises Clary for moving in on him. Aidan Turner will play Luke Garroway, the surrogate father of Clary Fray. Cch Pounder portrays Madame Dorthea, a witch who is Clary's downstairs neighbor.

Scott Charles Stewart was set to helm but vacated after the collapse instead choosing to start work on a TV series based on his film Legion. Now director Harald Zwart (The Karate Kid remake) has taken over.

Jessica Postigo and I. Marlene King wrote the adapted script. Robert Kulzer, Michael Lynne and Robert Shaye are producing.

Production on Mortal Instruments is set to begin on August 15th in Toronto--and is set for release on August 23rd, 2013.
