Captain America 3 VS. Man of Steel 2: Nobody Blinks...Yet

Marvel confirmed yesterday that "Captain America 3" will stay on course with its May 6th 2016 release date putting it out on the same weekend as rival DC Entertainment's Superman/Batman team-up Man of Steel Sequel.

The release of MOS 2 was delayed a full 10 months for a number of reasons. As a result, the original release date of July 17th 2015 is no longer doable. Thus, the studio picked the May 6th 2016 date--forcing the showdown. They quickly inserted the fantasy Pan into that original slot.

"Captain America: The Winter Soldier" helmers Joe Russo and Anthony Russo are set to return to their post for part 3 using a script by screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.

MOS 2 will see the return of Henry Cavill as Superman/Clark Kent, Affleck will play Bruce Wayne/Batman amid lots of fallout--while Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane are set to reprise their roles as Lois Lane, Perry White and Martha Kent. "Fast Five" star Gal Gadot's playing Wonder Woman

"Man Of Steel" writer David S. Goyer was back on the keyboard but now--THR reports that  Chris Terrio, who won an Oscar for writing Affleck's “Argo,” has been hired to write the latest draft of the MOS 2 script for director Zack Snyder.

Goyer is in the midst of developing several projects including an adaptation of author Neil Gaiman's  popular comic book series Sandman, which he’ll produce with Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Shooting schedules and post-production could always impact the plan. Also, Marvel has a second untitled movie scheduled to open that summer on July 8, so there is "wiggle room".

Now, Warner Bros president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman tells Bloomberg that in this game of release date chicken, the studio has no intention of flinching:

"It doesn't make a lot of sense for two huge superhero films to open on the same date but there is a lot of time between now and 5/6/16. However at this time, we are not considering a change of date for Batman vs. Superman."

Evercore analyst Alan Gould also weighed in, saying: "I don't think the studios or the theaters would be happy to see this. I would be surprised if they didn't end up changing these dates."

Fox's president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson chimed in adding: "A lot of films are announced many years in advance now, and some of it is posturing."
