Variety says that plans are underway for the "Stargate" franchise to get a film reboot with the 1994 film's director Roland Emmerich and writer Dean Devlin partnering with MGM and Warner Bros.
The plan is to kick off a proposed trilogy that explores the film original premise about an ancient artifact in Egypt which turns out to have the ability to create a wormhole between worlds.
Kurt Russell and James Spader
starred in the original which went on to gross over $200 million
worldwide. Emmerich and Devlin weren't a part of the three small screen incarnations
MGM chairman-CEO Gary Barber said in a statement: "We couldn't be more excited to once again partner with Roland and Dean, the world-class creators of the original 'Stargate,' to bring their reinvigorated vision of this wildly popular property to audiences of multiple generations. 'Stargate' is one of the biggest titles in MGM's vast library, and we look forward to adding this great franchise to our slate."
