THR reports that James Mangold ("Walk the Line," "The Wolverine") is in early talks to direct a biopic about former legendary NFL quarterback Joe Namath.
Namath
is one of the most revered and colorful figures in New York sports
history. Spending most of his career with the New York Jets in the
1960s and 1970s, Namath was also a notorious party boy and womanizer. Upon retirement from the game he appeared on numerous TV shows and films. He also was a commentator for ABC's Monday Night Football.
Michael Brandt and Derek Haas ("3:10 to Yuma") are writing the script.
Andrew Lazar and Cathy Konrad will produce.
Back in 2007 actor Jake Gyllenhaal was poised to play the Hall of Fame quarterback for Universal Pictures. That project went nowhere.
