The site says that director Marc Webb needs more time to work on the third film which is currently in pre-production. Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman apparently completed the screenplay for "Amazing 3" earlier this year with plans to begin production before the year's out..
The mediocre reviews and under performance of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" (my review) have no doubt made the suits rethink its release strategy. "Amazing 2" sits at about $699.1M globally, well below its box office goal and $60 million behind The Amazing Spider-Man of 2012 and is the lowest earner in the history of the film series so far.
Rather than give up that prime Summer release date, Sony will most likely move up the The Sinister Six" spin-off film instead from 2017 to that Summer 2016 release slot.
Nothing has been confirmed by the powers that be yet.
