With Tyler Perry's next Madea flick already in the works--he has another reason to celebrate..Madea Goes to Jail is still #1--Beating tween idoldom's Jonas Brothers and The 3D Concert Experience by a sizable margin...
Pamela McClintock of Variety:
Disney's "Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience" didn't sing loud enough in its domestic box office debut to outshine Lionsgate holdover "Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail," which nabbed the weekend crown in a surprise upset.
Coming in No. 2, "Jonas" grossed an estimated $12.7 million from 1,271 runs for a per screen average of $9,992.
That's lower than expected and far below the record $31.1 million opening for Disney's "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour," but it's still the second best opening ever for a concert pic.
"Madea" grossed an estimated $16.5 million from 2,052 runs in its second sesh for a cume of $64.8 million in its first 10 days.
Fox Searchlight's "Slumdog Millionaire" also made headlines, scoring the best Oscar bounce in more than a decade and coming in No. 3 for the weekend. Film grossed an estimated $12.2 million from 2,943 runs for a cume of $115.1 million.
Big Fox's sleeper hit "Taken" jumped the $100 million mark in its fifth sesh, grossing an estimated $10 million for a cume of $107.9 million. Pic declined a mere 12%.
After "Jonas," the weekend's other new wide release was Hyde Park's vidgame adaptation "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li," distributed by Fox. Pic placed No. 6, grossing an estimated $5.7 million from 1,136 runs...
Checking in overseas: 'Button' still tops...
Nicole Sperling of EW:
Jonas Brothers proved this weekend that they are no Miley Cyrus....
I wonder what this means (if anything) for the JoBros upcoming first non-concert feature film...? Time will tell if this is just a minor glitch for the Jonas boys or something more...?
