From RiddlesTo Penguin

Jim Carrey is up for the lead in the film adaptation of Richard & Florence Atwater's beloved 1938 children's book "Mr. Popper's Penguins," says The Hollywood Reporter.

Sean Anders and John Morris, ("Sex Drive") adapted the story which Jared Stern re-wrote. It follows Mr. Popper (Carrey), a house painter whose dreams of Arctic exploration prompt him to write letters to real explorers. One of them sends him a penguin, which he keeps in the icebox.

Before he knows it, the painter has a litter of twelve beaked birds. They eat voraciously, leading him to form Popper's Performing Penguins, a stage act that goes on tour and creates mayhem at every stop.

Ben Stiller Owen Wilson, Jack Black had also been circling the project.

The new version will have Carrey portraying a New York businessman who receives a half-dozen penguins rather than just the one.

Greenberg writer/director Noah Baumbach and Stiller were both considering re-teaming for the pic...

Instead Mark Waters (Mean Girls, The Spiderwick Chronicles) is directing what John Davis is producing.

Production kicks off this October in New York.
