Elgort beat out Brenton Thwaites, Nat Wolff, Nick Robinson and Noah Silver for the part.
The story follows Hazel ("The Descendants" and "The Amazing Spider-Man 2 co-star Woodley) a sixteen-year-old cancer patient, who is forced by her parents to attend a support group. She soon meets and falls in love with seventeen-year-old Augustus Waters (Elgort), an ex-basketball player and leg amputee.
Filmmaker Josh Boone, whose film Stuck In Love made a splash at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, has the job of directing the film. Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber wrote the adapted screenplay.
Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey will produce the pic.
Production hopes to start by the end of the year.
In "Divergent" the duo will play siblings--Production is underway in Chicago on that film and it's slated for release on March 21, 2014.
