With both star Andrew Garfield and director Marc Webb likely leaving the film series after "The Amazing Spider-Man 3," the question is what will Sony Pictures do next...
Will they reboot again? Will they recast? Or will they try passing
the torch to one of the other characters in the comics that have taken
on the responsibility of being Spider-Man
Garfield suggested replacing Peter Parker with the 13-year-old, half black, half Hispanic Miles Morales who became Spider-Man in the "Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man" storyline. If not Morales how about Miguel O'Hara from Spider-Man 2099?
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach both nixed the notion of anyone else but Peter wearing the Spidey suit.
Arad tells The Playlist:
"No. The one thing you cannot do, when you have a
phenomena that has stood the test of time, you have to be true to the
real character inside – who is Peter Parker? What are the biggest
effects on his life? Then you can draw in time, and you can consider
today's world in many ways. But to have multiple ones... I don't know if
you remember, but Marvel tried it. And it was almost the end of
Spider-Man."
Tomlach added: "As far as
we're concerned. The guys who take it over after us... Who knows..."
Regarding the "Venom" and "The Sinister Six" film spin-offs that are in development at the studio, the plan is that they are "all going to
converge in some way".
Arad says: "Everything we are going to do, all
the extensions, Spider-Man will always be there, the idea, even if he's
off-screen, will be there."
