SDCC '13: "Veronica Mars" Has Fans Cheering--First This...

News broke just before its official Comic-Con presentation that Jerry O'Connell has been cast as the newly installed Sheriff Lamb in the  "Veronica Mars" movie. O'Connell's character is described as the long-lost sibling of the previous sheriff, who was killed off in season three of  the show.

Jerry's message to fans:

Kristen Bell stars Jason Dohring returns as Logan Echolls. Chris Lowell as Veronica’s ex Stosh Piznarski and  Percy Daggs III, who played Veronica's best bud Wallace Fennel Francis Capra and Christine Lakin will reprise their roles of Eli "Weevil" Navarro and Susan Knight respectively and Tina Majorino has signed on to reprise her role as Cindy “Mac” Mackenzie as well. Brandon Hillock, who played Deputy Sacks, Kevin Sheridan, who played Sean Friedrich, Jonathan Chesner, who was known affectionately by his fellow Neptune High students as Corny. Krysten Ritter is back as Gia Goodman Daran Norris (Cliff McCormack), Amanda Noret (Madison Sinclair) Sam Huntington (Luke Haldeman) and Enrico Colantoni (Keith Mars) will be back too. "New Girl" star Max Greenfield will reprise his role as Deputy Leo. Ken Marino is set to reprise his role as rival private investigator Vinnie Van Lowe. Marino's "Party Down" co-star Martin Starr, has been cast as a new character in the film---named Lou 'Cobb' Cobbler. James Franco is rumored to appear as himself for a cameo role. And since former Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester will not be reprising her role as Carrie Bishop Twin Sister lead singer Andrea Estella will step in and play the part. Known as "the gossip queen of the 09ers" who falsely accused Neptune High teacher Mr. Rooks (Adam Scott) of having an affair with her to protect her best friend in Season 1 of the series. Estella scored the role because Thomas is a fan of Twin Sister's music and will be using 2 songs of theirs in the movie.

The highly successful "Veronica Mars" Kickstarter movie push got the ball rolling with series creator Rob Thomas receiving a total of $5.7 million from 91,585 backers - almost three times their original goal.

Thomas writes the script and will direct the feature-- "Life has taken Veronica away from Neptune. In the years since spoiling Keith's chances to be reelected sheriff, Veronica hasn't taken a case. But something big is about to bring her back home and back to her calling - which just happens to be around her ten year high school reunion."

Filming has started on the project that gets distribution via Warner Bros.

Thomas and Bell were joined by Dohring, Colantoni, Capra, Daggs III, Hansen, Majorino and Lowell -- but before the cast hit the stage, moderator Jeff Jenson introduced a loving tribute video to the fans and what basically amounted to the movie's first trailer.

"I can tell you that it sort of has a Godfather III theme to it," Thomas said of the teasing footage, "Which is odd, because why not pick Godfather II? It was better. … I can tell you [Bell's Veronica character] has not worked as a private detective since the last time you saw her. Part of this movie is her getting back into this life she thought she left behind."

Veronica Mars, it turns out, is a lawyer. Ten years out of Neptune High, and we first see her in a job interview with a prospective employer played by Jamie Lee Curtis-- whose casting provided another Comic-Con surprise.

As for her first day back in her iconic role, Bell did tell everyone the first thing she read on the script. "My first line back was, 'Charming drink names, I can't decide between a beast with two backs or a donkey punch. … Ooooh, do you think they'd let me order a virgin devirginator?'"

She got a few laughs -- as did Dohring and Lowell, the latter playing the more-than-divisive Piz. "Rob called and said, 'I think we're going to bring Piz back,'" said Lowell. "The death threats have almost stopped. Why now? I wore this shirt just so I wouldn't get shot."

That shirt read "Team Logan," an homage to the overwhelming majority of Veronica Mars fans rooting for Dohring's character.

The parade of fans asking questions about the original series drew a lot of emotion from the actors -- especially the ones who have kept a lower profile since the show canceled in 2007. A teary Capra admitted he thought people had forgotten about him, drawing applause and awes from the crowd.

As for the Veronica Mars that wasn't, Thomas also mentioned his original idea for the film that ended up not working.

"I wanted to do an Agatha Christie movie with everyone in one house -- very few sets and very few guest stars," said Thomas. "And that's not what we did. We made an incredibly ambitious, sprawling low-budget movie. We wanted to include all of those smaller parts that fans really loved."

When asked what he would do with an extra million dollars, Thomas simply said more time. "The tough part has been that you have to be moving all of the time," he said. "The actors know their roles, they're getting maybe three or four chances at a line reading … I want this to be the Bond franchise. I hope we make a ton of money on this movie, and we get to do it through the normal channels. If we're a huge hit, I'm not sure Kickstarer is meant to fund huge hits."
