Although Sony Pictures' "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" Comic-Con panel doesn't happen until later this afternoon, the director Marc Webb's already talking about the superhero sequel.
Webb confirms that while the film has multiple villains, some will only be on screen for a few minutes. Others are being set up for future films. Webb tells Movies.com:
"One of the things about 'Spider-Man' that's really fun is that the people who become villains often don't start out as villains. Most of the relationships are based in love in some ways. We're teasing certain characters that may not be his main foes... but the main villain is going to be Electro."
He tells SHH that actor Paul Giamatti's appearance as The Rhino is brief: "Rhino sort of makes a teasing appearance in the film in a very calculated and careful way." He confirms we'll see the Rhino's "horns" in the film, but he won't be shown in the footage at Comic Con this year saying "there's too much work to be done there."
Webb also spoke about The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 4--both of which already have release dates
"There have been some early talks about the nature of those next two films, but it's still too early to talk details. If you pay attention to this film that's coming out in May of next year, you may get a feeling and a sense of what's to come in the future.
The [announcement of the] fourth one was a little bit of a surprise. We always talked about there being a set of three movies, but there may be elements that expand outside Spider-Man that could fulfill that fourth film"
Andrew Garfield will return as Peter Parker and Emma Stone is gonna reprise her role as Gwen Stacy. Do these recent set pics confirm that the classic story The Night Gwen Stacy Died is part of the film? For the record Stone endorsed the idea last August when The Amazing Spider-Man was still in theaters...
Dane DeHaan ("Chronicle") has won the role of Harry Osborn Osborn of course is Peter Parker's best friend and eventual enemy who was played by James Franco previously. Jamie Foxx will be playing bad guy Electro. Chris Cooper has been cast as Norman Osborn--who eventually becomes Spidey's number one foe--The Green Goblin--The character was played previously by Willem Dafoe Felicity Jones (Like Crazy) told View London: "It’s all quite shrouded in secrecy, but I’m the Goblin’s girlfriend - I’m in a relationship with him, and his accomplice. I’m on the dark side.". Former Office star B.J. Novak has an unspecified role in the film.
Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Jeff Pinkner are writing the script based on a previous draft by James Vanderbilt.
Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach will produce.
The new film is now in post production to meet its May 2nd 2014 release date.
Actress Shailene Woodley was also at Comic Con yesterday to promote her upcoming film "Divergent". During press--she talked about her now excised appearance as Mary Jane Watson in "Amazing 2".
Woodley tells Empire:
“She was only going to be in four scenes, I think it’s really incredibly smart that she’s not in it, looking back at it now, because they’re introducing so many characters and MJ is such a vital character that it makes sense to hold off for future movies to introduce her.”
The thinking now is that Woodley won’t play MJ, with the role recast in a future sequel. Even if we never see her play the character, Woodley says she still got to say Mary Jane’s famous line, “Face it, tiger, you just hit the jackpot.”
“I did say it,” she laughed.
